Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome is a common eye condition that negatively affects quality of life, caused by insufficient tear production that keeps the eye surface moist or the rapid evaporation of tears. It is particularly common in individuals who are exposed to digital screens for long periods or in older age groups. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, this condition can be managed. The most important step is to recognize the symptoms in a timely manner. So, what are the symptoms of dry eye?

One of the most common complaints is the feeling of stinging and burning in the eyes. When the eye surface is not sufficiently moistened, a constant discomfort arises. An irritating sensation, as if there is sand or dust in the eyes, is one of the most noticeable signs of dry eye.

Redness is another symptom seen in many people with dry eyes. As the eye surface dries out, blood vessels become more pronounced, and redness, especially at the end of the day, becomes more noticeable.

Light sensitivity (photophobia) is also one of the common symptoms of dry eyes. When the eye surface lacks the protective tear layer, hypersensitivity to light may develop. This condition becomes particularly bothersome in daylight or when in front of a screen.

Eye fatigue and blurred vision are symptoms that affect the quality of vision in dry eye. When tears cannot perform their function, it can lead to blurred vision, especially after prolonged reading or computer use. The need to rub the eyes frequently is also a reflection of this condition.

Tearing, surprisingly, is a common symptom of dry eyes. The eyes may produce excessive tears in an attempt to compensate for dryness. However, these tears are of poor quality and do not have protective properties. As a result, despite the presence of tears, the eye surface cannot be adequately moisturized.

A feeling of heaviness in the eyelids, difficulty opening the eyes in the morning, or discomfort when blinking are also signs of dry eye.

In conclusion, the symptoms of dry eye can worsen over time and may cause permanent discomfort if left untreated. If you experience complaints such as stinging, burning, redness, light sensitivity, and blurred vision, you may be experiencing dry eye. It is crucial to pay attention to these symptoms and consult with an ophthalmologist without delay to protect your health.
