Ptosis, or eyelid drooping, is a condition where the eyelid is positioned lower than normal, leading to both aesthetic and functional problems. The eyelid, which partially or completely covers the pupil, can narrow the field of vision, cause headaches, and result in a fatigued appearance. So, how is ptosis treated, and what methods are used?
In the treatment of ptosis, the cause of the eyelid drooping must first be determined. This is because not all cases of ptosis have the same underlying cause, and the treatment approach should be personalized. There are two main types of this condition: congenital ptosis (present from birth) and acquired ptosis (developed later in life). With a correct diagnosis, ptosis can be completely corrected.
The most effective and permanent treatment for ptosis is surgery. Ptosis surgery involves strengthening the levator muscle, which lifts the eyelid, or if the levator muscle is insufficient, attaching the eyelid to the frontal muscle with silicone sutures. This procedure brings the eyelid back to its proper position, opens the field of vision, and provides a symmetrical and aesthetic appearance. The surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia, and patients are usually discharged the same day.
In addition to surgical treatment, temporary solutions may be applied depending on the cause of ptosis. For instance, if ptosis is related to a neurological condition, treating the underlying disease may also improve the eyelid condition. In some cases, specially designed ptosis glasses can be temporarily used to support the eyelid. However, this method is usually chosen to delay surgery or offer temporary solutions.
Ptosis treatment is crucial not only for aesthetic purposes but also for visual health. Especially in cases of ptosis noticed during childhood, if intervention is not made promptly, amblyopia (lazy eye) can develop. Therefore, when planning ptosis treatment, age, the severity of ptosis, the cause, and the patient’s overall health should be considered.
In conclusion, ptosis treatment is a possible and highly successful process. After treatment, patients experience better vision and a more vibrant and symmetrical eye structure. Before deciding on the treatment process, it is essential to have an evaluation by a specialist ophthalmologist.
